About Us

Belisama (pronounced Bel - i - SAH - ma) A celtic goddess, known from Romano-Gaulish inscriptions that equate her with the Roman goddess Minerva. Her name means "Summer Bright." Her consort, Belenus, is the God of the Sun, and she shares many attributes with him. She has also been associated with wisdom and healing, forge and craft.

Belisama Irish Dance was founded in 2006 in Santa Fe and Los Alamos, New Mexico. We are focused on the dancer as an individual with the goal being a well-rounded person as well as a good dancer. We have a strong focus on performance and choreography, and we perform frequently in the communities of Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Albuquerque. Students are invited to create choreography as well, which encourages creative thinking and gives the opportunity to teach others. We compete a few times a year and belong to Cumann Rince Naisunta (CRN), one of the three major Irish dance organizations in Ireland. While competition is encouraged, it is not required to be a student of Belisama. All levels and ages are welcome!

Adrienne Bellis is the director and founder of Belisama Irish Dance. Adrienne began Irish dancing in California at the Claddagh School of Irish Dance and is a National Champion as part of an 8-hand ceili team. She and many of her students have performed with artists such as Trinity Irish Dance Company, Lúnasa, Natalie MacMaster, Gaelic Storm and Eileen Ivers. Several of her students are national and regional champions, and many of them are up and coming choreographers. Adrienne is also a professional singer. Her voice can be heard on various film and video soundtracks, and on several singer-songwriter's albums. In addition to dancing, she works as a studio musician in Santa Fe and performs around town with local musicians.

Cumann Rince Náisiúnta (CRN), the Irish dance association of which Belisama is a member, is one of three international Irish dance associations, and the only one which sponsors "open platform" competitions (i.e. open to all Irish dancers irrespective of the organization that trained them). CRN currently has teachers in Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, the Netherlands, China, Australia, and the United States of America. CRN is widely known as the traditional dance organization because it focuses on maintaining the integrity of traditional dances, while actively encouraging the development of new and innovative work. More information about Cumann Rince Náisiúnta and its history can be found here.
